FAQ:

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy spans a wide variety of therapeutic approaches, working to improve an individual’s health and well-being through the hands-on manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues of the body.

What should I expect when I receive a massage for the first time?

At first your session, I'll ask about what motivates you to seek massage, current physical condition, medical history, lifestyle and stress level, and specific areas of pain or discomfort. After I've answered any questions you have for me, I'll leave the treatment room so you can privately disrobe to your level of comfort and get settled on the massage table.

Will I have to take off all my clothes?

While it is not always necessary to be fully disrobed for every session, clothing simply can get in the way. Approximately nine out of ten of both my male & female clients choose to disrobe completely - a choice which is up to you!

Will my body be covered with a sheet or towel during session?

Absolutely. Professional draping is used at all times in my practice, to respect the healing nature of the client-therapist relationship. Once in session, I will undrape only the part of your body being massaged, ensuring that your modesty is respected at all times.

Is massage sexual?

Never, when I am your therapist. Professional bodywork might be experienced as sensual, deeply relaxing, therapeutic, regenerative, restful, soothing, nurturing, healing, informative, investigative, spiritual, intense, centering, grounding, even uplifting. Fulfilling sexual needs, desires, or traumas is never part of my practice. The greater Austin community offers many healthful choices for those seeking professional sex therapy.

Does massage offer any real medical benefits?

Definitely. For the physical self: Massage therapy is designed to stretch and loosen muscles, improve blood flow and the movement of lymph throughout the body, facilitate the removal of metabolic wastes resulting from exercise or inactivity, and increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to cells and tissue. In addition, massage stimulates the release of endorphins -- the body's natural painkiller -- into the brain and nervous system. For the mental self -- Massage therapy provides a relaxed state of alertness, reduces mental stress and enhances capacity for calm thinking and creativity. For the emotional self -- Massage therapy satisfies the need for caring and nurturing touch, creates a feeling of well-being and reduces anxiety levels. Do I have any responsibilities during my massage session?

Absolutely. You should give me accurate health information (especially regarding pregnancy, cancer, acute injuries, and communicable skin conditions such as athlete's foot). And I strongly request that you always report discomfort of any kind -- whether it's from the massage itself or due to room temperature, volume of music, or other distractionsÑas immediately & clearly as possible.

Should I tip?

To tip or not to tip depends on the experience you have during your session-- the quality & approach of the work, the professionalism of the session, and how your self-care budget looks. It is always a compliment to receive a tip in the form of referralsÑand even better to continue to serve you!

What is your cancellation policy?

Because I value my time as much as you value yours, my cancellation policy requires 24 hours advance notice from the scheduled appointment time to avoid being charged the full fee of the scheduled session. Payment must be remitted in advance of the next session. In case of illness or emergency, exceptions are readily made.

What if I'm late for my appointment?

If you have trouble finding my office, or are running late, please call as immediately as possible. It's just like going to the movies - you either get to see the whole thing, or you don't! Late clients arriving within the first 15 minutes of the session may be able to receive the remaining time of their session, depending on alternate bookings.

When might the use of massage therapy be inappropriate?

If you suffer from certain circulatory ailments (such as phlebitis), infectious diseases, certain forms of cancer, cardiac problems, certain skin conditions, or any inflamed or infected tissues, be sure to consult your physician before initiating any massage program.

What is the origin of therapeutic massage?

Therapeutic massage methods used today have both Eastern and Western origins. The first written records of massage date back 3,000 years to early Chinese folk medicine and ancient Ayurvedic medicine of India. Shiatsu, acupressure and reflexology spring from these Eastern sources, as do other contemporary methods.

Western civilizations were introduced to therapeutic massage by Greek and Roman physicians. Modern Western massage is credited primarily to Peter Henrik Ling, a 19th century Swedish athlete. His approach, which combines hands-on techniques with active and passive movements, became known as Swedish massage -- still one of the most commonly used methods in the Western world.
